Most of guys who bought KTM TPI from first production they had this problem with leaking oil tanks. I also had leaking oil tank on my EXC250 TPI but after replacing it with UPDATED version of tank that problem is fixed for me, but for some guys also new tank started to leak. I think its just bad quality of plastics and very weak point for bolts.
I also found on some KTM TPI bikes the rear mount for this tank was welded not straight, so that also can cause tank to crack because one bolt is holding more than other one. Soon i will do video about KTM TPI PROBLEMS & HOW TO FIX IT so also this will be covered in that video.
Before buying this ktm tpi i was really happy with my exc300 carb. First problem with TPI happened when the engine started going in reverse it happens when i ride bike in very low RPM. Another problem appeared after about 5 hours, 2 stroke oil tank cracked. I thought it would all be great when do updating mapping, but i was wrong ! Bike is sometimes bogging in long uphills and its very easy to overheat with cooling fan turned on what is very strange. I do not say it’s a bad bike , it can be very nice ridden in fast terrain and in hard enduro also. And its working good, but its too much sensitive with a lot of sensors. If the engine is overheated, it starts to bogging and cutting power…
Most of the guys who bought new KTM EXC TPI 2018 having this issues with leaking 2 stroke oil. For first I was thinking I over filled my oil tank with 2 stroke oil and that is the reason why my bike wet from oil.
But after small check after washing the bike I can see small leaking from the oil tank after I removed the tank I can see where it was leaking. I contacted my KTM Dealer where I bought the bike.
From KTM Dealer I got the email, this happens because of vibrations from frame and engine. KTM Factory will produce the second version of this 2 stroke oil tank, it will be stronger and not possible to break from vibrations.
I welded plastic and then used double glue for maximum holding, I hope it will not break on another side, I need to wait now sometime to get the second version of this oil tank for my KTM EXC250 TPI 2018. After small research over the facebook and google, i found I am not the only one person having this problem. There are also guys on Husqvarna TE300i and Te250i 2 stroke 2018 models having same problems. So everybody is having this problem, and one guy said: we have 8 new bikes here, and 5 bikes have this problem.
After testing i can say the bike is running lean more than all carb models. But its worth money and buy one, dont allow people to hate TPI models, they are great bikes.
KTM TPI EXC 2018 models are running very good in low revs at the bottom end, but on top end the bike is running lean, maybe that is ok but its weird. So EXC250 TPI is using a lean mixture of gas and air.
Its great bike but its not perfect, also i need say carburator models are also not perfect. And i dont know why people hate this model so much, also 2017 ktm model had big problems with mikuni carb and now after one year for all people mikuni is okay but now everybody is hating the KTM EXC TPI 2018 models.
For me the bike is great not perfect but its great, i am not pro rider so its working for me. Also this is first year of tpi models they will improve in next year !
If you want torque and a fast top end to die then you need to buy KTM TPI 2018 models, they are very lightweight and made ready to race.
The new models from KTM TPI 2018 are using 72mm cylinder bore and sophisticated power valve what will make really smooth power and very controllable. On the sides, it has two injectors for supplying the fuel intro rear transfer ports so its called Transfer port injection (TPI). Premix 2 stroke oil is past for history, with new oil pump developed by KTM it’s working almost perfect and it will save you more than 50% of the oil.
The oil capacity is approximately enough for 5-6 tanks of refills. It will save your time and give you more time to ride and not worry about premix. TPI is now fitted with much more stronger power generator which will make 196W it’s same like on EXF 4 stroke bikes.
